What is forensic psychology?
The Australian Psychological Society describes forensic psychology as ‘the application of psychological knowledge, concepts and skills to the understanding and functioning of the legal and criminal justice system’. It is said to embrace psychology and the law and related services that assist in the evaluation and treatment of offenders.
Forensic psychologists are trained in providing psychological assessments and reports for use in Courtroom decisions. Specialized competencies include the design, development, implementation and evaluation of offender interventions. This assists Courts to make decisions based on individualized factors and presentations for each offender.
Forensic psychologists may also visits gaols to interview offenders who have been incarcerated.
